The Alexandria Law Library provides legal resources for the benefit of the entire Alexandria community, including its citizens, government agencies, local businesses, the judiciary, and members of the bar.
Everyone entering the Courthouse building is required to pass through a metal detector.
Cell phones, cameras and other electronic devices are not allowed in the building, unless you are a Virginia licensed, practicing attorney with a valid bar card and photo ID.
Small lockers are available to store your cell phone for a $0.25 fee.
Staff is available to assist users in locating, accessing, and using resources in the collection.
Staff may neither provide legal opinions/advice, assist with filling out legal forms, nor interpret the law/legal materials.
Question regarding interpretation of law or legal materials should be directed to a licensed attorney.
The Law Library contains a Virginia-specific collection of primary and secondary legal materials, including legal form books; select topic-specific, Maryland, and D.C. secondary resources; federal case law and statutory materials. Materials in the library are for reference only and do not circulate.
The Law Library recently acquired the Handbook of Virginia Local Government Law. It is available electronically at the Law Library now and in hardback format in 2020.
The library provides select information packets, which include *samples. The information packets can be purchased and printed at the Alexandria Law Library (with a standard library charge of $0.25 per page) or can be printed from this web site by following the links below.
*Samples provided serve only as guides to draft documents from scratch.
For customers looking for local legal representation, the Law Library provides access to, and assistance with, applying to the Alexandria Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service. For a fee of $55, paid to the Bar Association, clients receive a referral for a 30-minute appointment with an Alexandria Bar Association attorney who practices in the client’s particular area of need. Appointments are usually scheduled within 1-3 days of the first contact from the client and take place at the attorney's office.
