INTERNET & WI-FI

All public areas of the Alexandria Library provide wireless access during all hours the Library is open.   

If you have questions about setting up wi-fi connection, contact a Reference Librarian at any branch reference desk.

  • No password is required for Wi-Fi networks
  • The network is labeled:
    • ALWireless

  • The Library's wireless network is not secure. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software, within three hundred feet.
  • Library staff is not able to provide technical assistance and no guarantee can be provided that you will be able to make a wireless connection.
  • The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Library's network.
  • Your computer or other device must be equipped with a compatible wireless card.
  • The following tips are general guidelines and require that you understand how to configure and restore the settings of your own computer.
     

 

TIPS

Wireless Settings

  • SSID or Network Name = ALWireless
  • WEP or Encryption = none or disabled
  • Mode or Network Type = Infrastructure or Access Point
  • Authentication = Open or None
  • TCP/IP settings = Use DHCP or "obtain IP Address automatically"
  • Turn Wireless ON - Many laptops come with built-in wireless, and some with external cards, have switches, buttons or software that can be used to turn wireless off to save battery life. Make sure that it is turned ON.

Configuration Tips

  • Before changing any settings, try using the wireless network. It may already work.
  • Wireless settings used at home can conflict with settings needed at a library. Please make certain that original settings can be restored before making any changes.
  • After making changes, it is possible that you may need to reboot.
  • If using a wireless client manager, check the instructions that came with the program regarding the possibility of creating a profile to be used at the library in addition to the profiles used at home or elsewhere.
  • MAC OS - Use the Airport Setup Assistant program to join existing Airport network, signal should be detected for "library", and follow steps to conclusion.
     

Network Setting Tips

  • Windows 10 settings are found through the Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel.
  • TCP/IP settings should be set to use DHCP or "obtain IP Address automatically".
  • DNS settings, if applicable, should be set to use DHCP or to obtain automatically.
  • MAC OS X can adjust through "Apple Menu>>Location>>Network Preferences".
  • In the event certain information does not display, try turning off any firewall or pop up blocker software you may have installed on your laptop.
